Can You Drive After Laughing Gas?

Laughing gas is a mild sedative often used in dentistry to help anxious patients. Unlike other types of sedation, it doesn't require any preparation like fasting. But, how about after the procedure is over and the gas is switched off? For how long will the side effects linger?

Keep reading this short article to find the answer.

Here's How Laughing Gas Works

Laughing gas is actually nitrous oxide, a mild and safe sedative used in dentistry on patients of all ages (yes, including children.)

As with any type of sedation, your McFarland sedation dentist will first make sure that laughing gas is the right option for you. On the day of the procedure, they will place a small mask on your nose and you will start breathing in a mixture of nitrous oxide and pure oxygen. Within minutes, you will begin to feel calmer and even a bit euphoric.

The sedative is so mild that you will continue to be awake and aware of its effects.

Are There Any Side Effects?

One of the major benefits of laughing gas is that its effects are short-lived. In most cases, the gas exits your system within minutes after the mask is removed.

Of course, some people may experience some mild side effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness, or even nausea for a bit longer.

Can You Drive Yourself Home After Laughing Gas Sedation?

Even minor impairments can make operating a vehicle risky. That's why we here at Lakeview Modern Dentistry will always recommend that you remain in the dental office until you’ve recovered fully from the effects of any sedative, including laughing gas. The period may depend on the patient and their body's reaction to the gas. Some may be good to go immediately after the treatment while others may need at least 15 to 30 minutes after the mask is removed before considering driving.

That said, it's safe to drive yourself home after laughing gas. However, if you've never used laughing gas and don't feel comfortable enough driving alone after the treatment, you can ask a friend to drive you home or at least accompany you.

Laughing Gas Aftercare

As we said, laughing gas is a mild sedative that leaves the body very quickly. Unlike other sedation options, it doesn't have any lingering side effects that could impair your normal activity. You can get dental treatment and then back to work, for example.

You also won't have any restrictions either such as avoiding certain foods or activities.
