Dental Implants Vs. Dentures – What’s The Difference?

Wondering what the difference is between dental implants and dentures, and which one’s right for replacing your missing teeth in McFarland? In this blog from Lakeview Modern Dentistry, we’ll discuss everything you need to know.

The Pros & Cons Of Dentures

Dentures are false teeth that replace one, several, or all of your missing teeth to restore your smile and your bite. Here is a quick look at their pros and cons.

Pros

  • Can replace any number of teeth – Partial dentures can replace one or several teeth, even if they’re not located next to each other, and full dentures can replace an entire mouth of missing teeth.
  • Fast & simple fitting process – You may need to have one or more teeth extracted, but after this, the denture fitting process usually takes only a few weeks, so you’ll get new teeth quickly.
  • Affordable & covered by insurance – Dentures are almost always covered, at least partially, by insurance. They’re an affordable way to replace your teeth.

Cons

  • Short lifespan – Dentures usually last about 5 years before requiring replacement.
  • May move and shift – Even properly-fitted dentures may move and shift somewhat as you eat and speak.
  • Requires lots of maintenance – Caring for dentures will take some getting used to, and you may need to make some lifestyle changes.

The Pros & Cons Of Implants

Dental implants consist of a metal implant that’s surgically placed into your mouth, as well as an “implant restoration” like a crown, dental bridge, or denture that attaches to one or more implants. Here are their pros and cons.

Pros

  • Can replace any number of teeth – Like dentures, implants are versatile and can be used to replace one, several, or an entire mouth of missing teeth.
  • Extremely long lifespan – Dental implants can easily last 30+ years with proper care, and most patients keep them for the rest of their lives.
  • Attached to your jaw bone – Unlike dentures, implants are connected to your jaw bone and help stimulate and preserve it after jaw bone loss. They also will never move or shift when you eat or speak.

Cons

  • Expensive treatment – Dental implants are usually the most expensive method of replacing missing teeth.
  • Takes a long time – It can take up to 6 months or longer to get implants, and that doesn’t include pre-treatment surgeries, if necessary.
  • You may not qualify – You must have a strong jaw bone and reasonably good oral health to be a candidate for dental implants.
